Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) is doing 'good' business. Many organisations now want to demonstrate that they are behaving in a way that is more responsive to people's concerns. They want to show that they can operate in a manner that is good for society and the environment.

Definitions of CSR
UK government sees CSR as the way business deals with social, economic and environmental impacts.

The EU says CSR is 'a concept whereby companies integrate social and environmental concerns in their business operations and in their interaction with their stakeholders on a voluntary basis'.

CSR:

  • Covers social and environmental issues;
  • Is part of business strategy and operations;
  • Is a voluntary concept; (although the EU AM Directive requires reporting)
  • Helps interact with internal (employees) and external stakeholders (customers, neighbours).

CSR helps business take account of its economic, social and environmental impacts in the usual way it operates - while maximising the benefits and minimising the downsides.
