A
holistic approach looks at the whole picture.
The totality of something is much greater than the sum of
its component parts.
The picture cannot be understood by the isolated examination
of its bits.
The term development is commonly used in all sorts of situations.

Adding the word
'sustainable' makes us think about the future as well as the present.
Sustainable development is based on two underlying principles:
- Limiting the use
of the environment to sustainable levels, ensuring the environmental resource
base is not overexploited.
- Just and equal
access of every human to environmental resources.
