Holistic approach
 

A holistic approach looks at the whole picture.

The totality of something is much greater than the sum of its component parts.

The picture cannot be understood by the isolated examination of its bits.

The term development is commonly used in all sorts of situations.

Countries are often classified as developed/underdeveloped.

Adding the word 'sustainable' makes us think about the future as well as the present.

Sustainable development is based on two underlying principles:

  1. Limiting the use of the environment to sustainable levels, ensuring the environmental resource base is not overexploited.

  2. Just and equal access of every human to environmental resources.
