Unit 2 Managing Energy Use

Introduction

This unit looks at the use of energy by organisations and its impact on the environment. You will look at energy use in general and within your own organisation. You will carry out an energy audit in your own workplace.

WHAT YOU MUST LEARN

Different types of energy

Know the three main types of energy - electricity, gas, oil

Understand the uses of energy e.g. cooking, heating, lighting, running machinery etc. and know their sources e.g. national grid, mains gas, gas tanks etc.

Understanding energy use in your own organisation; alternative energy sources e.g. wind power, solar power, biomass etc.

Environmental costs

Understand the impact of fossil fuels e.g. acid rain, ozone depletion , pollution, use of scarce resources.

Know the advantages and disadvantages of different fuels and which are the most environmentally friendly fuels.

Know the environmental and financial costs of fuels and the costs to future generations.

Know what can be done to reduce costs e.g. reduce energy usage or use more environmentally friendly alternatives.

Managing energy usage

Understand methods of reducing energy usage e.g. switching off equipment, not having lights too bright, closing windows to preserve heat etc.

Know how this can be applied in your own workplace.

Know how to measure and monitor energy use.

Understand the importance of, and how to gain, staff support for changes in energy use.
