ENVIRONMENTAL TRAINING NEEDS ANALYSIS (ETNA)

The aim of this simple Environmental Training Needs Analysis is to:

  • Help comply with new requirements of ISO 14001:2004 for 'competence, training and awareness'
  • Provide basic structure for environmental managers determining training needs.

Ask yourself the following questions:

1 Are there other managers who need training about the EMS?

    YES: e.g All managers need to be aware of the environment policy and targets and possible changes in procedures.

    NEEDS: Training (or on-line learning) about the main decisions made by your organisation

2 Which staff are involved with possibly significant aspects of work?
'Significant Aspects' of Work should have been determined in Para 4.3.1 of ISO 14001:2004

    YES: e.g. those involved in waste stream if waste already determined as significant aspect

    NEEDS: To be "competent" - ie have the necessary skills and underpinning knowledge to carry out procedures.

3. Have you any staff with particular responsibilities for environment?

    YES: e.g Designated people responsible for energy, waste, water, or transport OR union representatives with environmental responsibilities.

    NEEDS: Further learning about environemntal impacts and environmental practices to improve environmental perfromance

4 Are some staff going to be required to produce environmental procedures?

    YES: e.g One person from each area is going to need to produce procedures that implement policy and help reach targets.

    NEEDS: Competence to produce environmental procedures.
    Suggest use the Health & Safety National Occupational Standards as a guide for determing procedures (Unit B,C & D develop monitor, develop and review procedures).

5. Do staff need to be aware of their roles in relation to the EMS?

    YES: All Staff

    NEEDS: "Awareness" raising re their role in relation to the EMS.
