What you should look for when screening your Labour Providers

You will need to look at the following areas and where possible, you should keep copies of any documentation you have seen as part of your checks.

VAT/TAX/Company RegistrationH&S training/Hygiene recordsHours
National Insurance NumbersContracts of employmentAccomodation
Immigration & the right to workWagesTransport

Talk to workers: No matter how many documents you check, you are most likely to find out if workers are being exploited by talking to them, in confidence.

You should talk to workers to find out if they are being treated fairly by their employer and encourage an open door policy so they feel comfortable to come to you if they are being exploited or having difficulties with their employer.

VAT/TAX/Company Registration

  • See and copy evidence that the LP is registered with the Inland Revenue, HMCE (if their turnover is over £58,000) and Company's House. The VAT number should match the VAT number on any invoices you receive from the LP.
  • Check that VAT and tax is being paid tothe relevant Government authority.

National Insurance Numbers

  • (Clarification on what Labour Users may access for this section to be confirmed.)

Immigration & the right to work

  • Employers have the responsibility of checking workersID to ensure workeers have the right to work in the UK. Your LP should have a robust system for checking ID, keeping a copy of this on file and know how to spot a fake.
  • There should be no original documents held by the LP. (see also Regular Employment )
