Child Labour - UK Law

  • The minimum working age is 16 years for full time employment (if birthday is in July or August, they may be 15).
  • The minimum age for part time work is 13 years.
  • Children under 16 cannot work in an industrial context.
  • No hazardous work for workers under 18.
  • Young workers (15-18) should undergo annual health and capability assessment.
  • Minors are not permitted to work overtime or to work nights.
  • A child aged 13-16 must apply for a work permit from a local authority.

The Children's and Young Persons Act 1998 specifies restrictions on working hours:

Under 16

  • 2 hours maximum on a school day, 5 hours on a Saturday (8 hrs if aged 15)
  • Restricted to light duties
  • No night work (7pm - 7am)
  • If they work more than 4 hrs they must have a 1 hour break
  • Employment must not interfere with school attendance

16-18 year old

  • Maximum of 40 hours per week, 8 hrs/day
  • 12 consecutive hours rest per day
  • 30 minute break for every 4.5 hrs worked
  • 2 days off per week
