Regular Employment - Law

  • Agreements may be either written, oral or implied or a mixture of all three. There are a number of specific cases where they must be written ie home workers, part-time, apprenticeships.
  • All employees taken on for one month or more are entitled to be given, within two months of the date the employment starts, a written statement setting particulars.
  • It is always open to either party to.seek to renegotiate with the other the terms and conditions.
  • Probationers - written contract for trial period, not more than 6 months for qualified technicians or 2 months for non-qualified workers. There is no maximum probationary period written into statutory law for other areas.
  • Piece-rate workers - the applicable Collective Agreement governs working conditions, including the salary.
  • Employees taken on for one or more months, must by law be given a written statement setting out the principal terms and conditions after the first month of employment.
  • Employers must not retain original documentation of workers for any length of time.
