How to use the Toolkit
This toolkit is designed to help you
-assess your production sites against the Co-operative Group’s Code of Conduct
-identify areas of risk
-identify suitable corrective actions
-demonstrate continuous improvement and commitment to the Co-operative Group’s standards
The sections of the toolkit
Each section of the toolkit covers one of the issues in the Co-operative Group’s Code of Conduct and contains:
-an explanation of the issue
-the Co-operative Group’s code and expectations
-requirements of national law
-an explanation of what this means for your production site
-a set of questions to help you to assess your worksite against the Code of Conduct
To understand how your workplace measures up against the Co-operative Group’s Code of Conduct, you will need to work through the assessment questions in each section, answering yes or no to each one.
To answer the questions you will need to:
-make a visual inspection of the workplace to check equipment, policies and working practices
-look at management records (including contracts, pay and hours records, payslips, training records etc.)
-talk to managers (including the production manager, health & safety manager, personnel manager etc.)
Where the answer to a question is ‘yes’, you meet the Co-operative Group’s standards.
Where the answer to any of the questions is ‘no’, you will need to make improvements to bring your workplace into line with the Co-operative Group’s Code of Conduct. The final section of the toolkit provides you with a template for action plans, which you can use to plan and demonstrate improvement.
It would be easy to tick “yes” through all the assessments. But this would be missing an opportunity for your business. By being self-critical and conducting a thorough risk assessment now, you can build a better business in the future.
