Working hours are not excessive
What is the issue?

Pay and hours are closely linked issues. Wages for many workers around the world are too low to support a decent standard of living. As a result, workers often end up working very long hours.

In many factories around the world, workers routinely work 12-16 hours a day, seven days a week in peak periods. Often they are not allowed to refuse overtime and are not paid at a higher rate for overtime hours.

This level of overtime working threatens quality, productivity and worker welfare. Exhausted workers are much more likely to work slowly, make mistakes, have accidents and fall ill.

“Guangdong labourers making toys for corporations such as McDonald’s, Disney and Mattel regularly work up to 18 hours a day to complete orders”
An investigation by the Hong Kong Christian Industrial Committee showed that illegal overtime occurred regularly at 20 factories operated by six out of eight contractors.”
Toys sold with McDonald’s meals were made by child labourers earning 1.5 yuan (13p) an hour.”
