PERFORMANCE STANDARDS

Performance Standards help companies manage and improve their social and environment performance through an"outcomes-based approach".

This means that each Performance Standard spells out the desired outcomes. The overall objectives are followed by specific requirements. Companies achieve these outcomes through means that are:

• Appropriate to the nature and scale of the project and
• Commensurate with the level of social and environmental risks (likelihood of harm) and impacts.

To avoid or at least minimize involuntary resettlement wherever feasible by exploring alternative project designs

To mitigate adverse social and economic impacts from land acquisition or restrictions on affected persons’ use of land by:

(i) providing compensation for loss of assets at replacement cost; and

(ii) ensuring that resettlement activities are implemented with appropriate disclosure of information, consultation, and the informed participation of those affected

To improve or at least restore the livelihoods and standards of living of displaced persons

To improve living conditions among displaced persons through provision of adequate housing with security of tenure4 at resettlement sites

Performance Standard 6: Biodiversity Conservation and Sustainable Natural Resource Management

§ To promote the sustainable management and use of natural resources through the adoption of practices that integrate conservation needs and development priorities
